Natal Flora Publications Trust

  • The Natal Flora Publications Trust was established in 1992 to raise sponsorship for the publication of popular, affordable books on the indigenous plants of KwaZulu-Natal & the Eastern Region, with the object of stimulating greater care and understanding of our exceptionally rich environment.

KwaZulu-Natal and the eastern region of South Africa is home to over 10 000 species of plants, one of the richest floral regions in Africa. Within in this region three centres of plant diversity (CPDs) or 'hot spots' were identified in a world atlas published by IUCN in 1994: Maputaland, Pondoland and the Drakensberg Alpine regions. A CPD is an area of global botanical importance with high diversity and large numbers of endemic or threatened species with social, economic, cultural or scientific importance.

The Trust's publications have been very successful owing to the comprehensive, user-friendly nature of the books and the affordable price, made possible by the generous contributions from sponsors, both corporate and individual. The books are illustrated with more full colour photographs than any other guides in South Africa, generously donated by the photographers.
