Quarterly Journal: Veld and Flora

The quarterly journal of the Botanical Society, Veld & Flora, is a glossy colour-filled magazine that is sent to members and is not available in bookstores. The journal covers a wide variety of topics related to the flora of southern Africa, mainly, but occasionally also some feature articles about the flora of other parts of Africa. The regular items include Director's Notes, Branch Diaries, Conservation News, News and Events, Book Reviews, Letters to the Editor and Classified Advertisements. Feature articles are received from members and other contributors and the journal is ably edited by Caroline Voget.

Submission of articles for Veld & Flora
Articles submitted for publication in Veld & Flora will be placed in our file and carefully considered for publication with the other articles received. Articles will be published at the discretion of the Managing Editor, Editor and Veld & Flora Committee. Please note that if an article is accepted we will endeavour to publish it as soon as possible but preference will be given to articles with particular reference to the activities, aims and mission of the Botanical Society. In addition, since we usually have many articles lined up, it should be clearly understood that we cannot guarantee the publication of a particular article in a specific issue of Veld & Flora. Articles are received on an ongoing and regular basis and we require a long ‘lead time’ (in excess of three months) before the publication date of any edition of Veld & Flora, i.e. articles should be submitted for consideration well in advance of any desired publication date.

Once your article has been assessed (which could take up to three months) you would be informed of the status.

If you would like to contribute an article please consult the Veld & Flora author guidelines.pdf (Adobe pdf, 66KB).

Feature Articles of the journal for the past four years.

Wild Flower Guides

The first Wild Flower Guide of the Botanical Society was published in spring (September) 1981. Since then nine further guides have been published, a number of which have been revised and reprinted more than once. These guides are regional in nature, covering mainly the western part South Africa, since other similar field guides have been published by other publishers on the eastern and northern parts.

The guides are arranged systematically and illustrated either with colour photographs or with paintings. They each cover from 300 - 820 species of plants found in each of the respective regions.

Special Guides

For the first time in its publication history, in October 2000 the Botanical Society published a guide specific to one family of plants the Restios or Cape Reeds. This book describes all the genera of the Restionaceae, however it is focused on species occuring on the Cape Peninsula.
